President's Letter

Hello Everyone!

I am excited about serving as your state president this year, as well as, taking the new challenges that our profession faces in an ever-changing world.  In all the uncertainty we face in our world today, one thing remians constant, public safety personnel can always be counted on to meet the new challenge and exceed what is expected.
There are many opportunities for you to get involved in your chapter this year through quarterly meetings, training sessions, committees and serving as a regional representative.  We need workers, so I hope you will volunteer or say "Yes" when I call and ask you to serve.  Networking with your peers across the state can be very rewarding and you'll have the opportunity to make some new friends for life.
One of our first goals as a chapter this year is to establish a web site.  Gina Bowman is chairing this project and she is working hard to get it up and running.  Through the web site we can keep you better informed about what is happening around the state, within the chapter and the training opportunities available across the state.  As soon as the web site is set up, we will discontinue mailing the newsletter.  Feel free to give us your ideas and suggestions about what you want to see on the web pages.
If you didn't attend the state conference this past April, you missed a great time.  We moved the conference to the Beachside Resort in Gulf Shores and those who attended wanted to go back in 2003.  So we are going back.  I hope you will plan to attend and join us for some great training sessions, food, fun, prizes and fellowship.  Something new this year will be the honoring of a Telecommunicator of the Year at the conference, so look for information on the web page about how you can nominate the telecommunicator from your agency.  As you can see, plans are already underway for the 2004 Conference and I know you won't want to miss it!  I heard something about APCO Bob, the beach and bikinis!!!!
It's a pleasure to work with you.  If I or any of the executive officers can be of assitance to you this year, please contact us, as we are here to serve you.  I know that each of them would be delighted to assist you.
I look forward to seeing each of you at the quarterly meetings.  Thanks for all you do each day to keep us safe.

May God Bless You Richly.

Your President,
Jo Tranter

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

A special "Thank You" to those who supported the 2003 State Conference.  Whether you were an attendee or exhibitor, manned the PSAP's, worked on the conference committee or lended a hand, your participation was appreciated.  The "Silver Celebration" of 25 years as a chapter is something everyone should take pride in achieving.  As we move foward there are many endeavors to challenge us.  Having the expertise of our members will be a valuble asset to all.  As we reflect and look foward, we should take time to ask ourselves "What can I contribute to my profession?"  Your APCO Chapter is a good place to "begin a work."  Hopefully you will make plans to attend Quarterly Meetings and State or National Conferences.  See you there!!!

Respectfully,
Pat Hall
Alabama International Executive Council Representative

To the AL Chapter of APCO,

Thank you so much for welcoming me to Alabama with such open arms.  Your hospitality was unbelievable!  Further it is obvious that Alabama is the home of some very talented, sincere and committed public safety professionals.  I feel much richer for having met each of you and I hope that you will be there when I come looking for your talents to move APCO foward into the future.

God Bless all of you,

Wanda McCarley
Tarrant County 911 District

One day a lady was driving down the highway.  She frequently checked her speedometer to make sure she stayed within the speed limit.  However, when she looked into her rearview mirror, much to her dismay, she saw a police car not far behind her.  And to make matters worse, the police car turned on his flashing lights.  She thought to herself, "Uh-oh, what have I done now?  I'm not speeding, I'm not drinking, I have my seatbelt on, and I've kept up my license dues and everything!"
So, she pulled over and the police car pulled over to the side right behind her car.  She drove her car slowly to a stop, slowly rolled down her window and prepared for a ticket when she knew she didn't deserve it.  The policeman walked up to her window and spoke to her.  The lady pointed to her ear and shook her head, meaning she was deaf.  The policeman smiled slightly and knowing sign language, signed back, "I know, I'm here to tell you that your horn is stuck."

Little Sammy's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station.  There they saw pictures tacked to a big bulletin board.  The label clearly read, "The 10 Most Wanted".
One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person.
"Yes", said the policeman, "the detectives want him very badly".
So little Sammy asked, while tugging on the man's belt, "Um, mister, why didn't you keep them when you took their pictures?"

Who am I?

I am the voice that calms the mother into breathing life back into her apneic infant son.
I am the invisible hand that holds and comforts the elderly man who woke up to find his wife of 50 years had passed away during the night.
I am the friend who talks the disgruntled teenager out of ending his own life.
I sent help when you had your first automobile accident.
I am the one who tries to obtain infromation from the callers to ensure that the scene is safe for those I dispatch to emergencies, all the while anticipating the worst, hoping for the best.
I am the psychologist who readily adapts my language and tone of voice to serve the needs of my callers with compassion and understanding.
I am the ears that listen to the needs of all those I serve.
I have heard the screams of faceless people I never will meet nor forget.
I have cried at the atrocities of mankind and rejoiced in the miricles of life.
I was there, though unseen by my comrades in the field, during the most trying emergencies.
I have tried to visualize the scene to coincide with the voice I heard.
I am usually not privy to the outcome of a call, and so I wonder...
I am the one who works weekends, strange shifts and holidays.
Children do not say they want my job when they grow up.  Yet, I am here at this vocation by choice.
Those I help do not call back to say thank you.  Still there is comfort in the challenge, integrity and purpose of my employment.
I am thankful to provide such a meaningful service.
I am a mother, father, sister, brother, husband, wife, son or daughter.
I am here when you need me and still here when you don't.
My office is never empty and the work here is never done.
I am always on call.  The training is strenuous, demanding and endless.
No two days at work here are the same.

Who am I?

I am an emergency dispatcher and I am proud.
